Shouldn't w1 go to w1 and w2 go to w2 for the backup heat to work right?

w1 and w2 are tied together inside the unit, unless the wires are cut to stage the electric heat, w1 or w2 brings on all heat strips. If you used a 3 stage heat thermostat before you will need to hook it up for all heat strips to work.
