400 kcmil does not have a true AWG comparison. Using conversion tables it would be about 7/0.

So 1 awg should be satisfactory ?

The AWG stops at 0000, AKA 4/0, then changes over to circular mil size for greater than #4/0.

An electrician would say "Four Ought" for #4/0.

An electrician would say "400" for 40O kcmil.

Kcmil is for 1000 circular mils.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? 400 KCmil is a very big wire and much bigger than a 4/0.

tlabarge, please start over again, list all your questions here, give details about what your asking and why.

You "1 awg" response is confusing.

#1 to feed a 400A panel?

PLEASE hire an electrician before you throw away thousands of dollars and/or kill someone!

Tlabarge, you had three threads going and your getting mixed up.

And now you went and upset Stan with your confusion.

I deleted TWO other threads.
