My husband works out of state for his company from the beginning of October until the end of April, then he returns home. He is only reimbursed for a part of his rental expense. He pays all of his living expenses. Can anything be written off on taxes, such as his portion of rent, gas, mileage, etc?

He can deduct he difference between the reimbursements and his actual living expenses on Form 2106, with the accumulated expenses being an itemized deduction on Schedule A under MISCELLANEOUS deductions. This is if he was a W-2 employee.

If he was a contractor, he would deduct his expenses on Scedhule C.
