What is the purpose of a neutral leg in a breaker panel

Think of the neutral as the return wire for the current. Black feeds in the power, it is used by the appliance and the residual is returned to earth. You need a complete circuit for electron flow. When nothing is hooked up, the neutral, like the black, sits there.
