Don't know why your best friend might have said that; Can't comment on that.
Here's how you decide - Can you see him going around with other girls, without you getting jealous? (Seriously, close your eyes & imagine him hangin out with some chick - talking, laughing, dancing) if you are OK with it, you can make good friends,
If you feel otherwise, you have feelings for him, at least for now. So ask him to start dating or give ti sometime & see if the feeling fades away.

That is great! I'm happy for you! However you must keep in mind, is it worth it to risk the friendship? Can you honestly see yourself with him and not getting hurt in the end? The only one that can answer those questions are you, so let your mind and heart come to a decision. Best of luck! =]
