I am working on starting a nonprofit resale store. I would like to take donations and give support to the community. Helping the homeless, people or families in transition, and other low income or down on your lick situations that acquire more help than one may be eligible for.I want to give back to the community while eventually employing individuals and helping them to become stable. If you have any information or links that may help me on my journey they will be very welcomed.YONNIE

Have you filed as a not-for-profit with IRS?
Where are you?

I would suggest that you talk with first other non profits, and then also hire an attorney and CPA to help set it up, since there will be very specific rules.
First you will need to start an incorporation. Then you will file paper work with the IRS to become a reconised by them. Some states will require that of the state also.
You will have to set up specific rules, by laws and set ways you are going to help those in need.
*** also have you ever actually helped those in need. 75 percent of the "needy" people coming in your door for help will be scams of some sort. IN fact in Atlanta even on nights under freezing many homeless will not even let you take them to a shelter because they would have to bathe and not drink.
Next are you going to apply for government grants, ( there are some for programs helping homeless and often for shelters. But often you will have to hire a grant writer to prepare the paper work.
So how much capitol do you have to start,
