I worked in NYC for part of the year and live in NJ. My NYC employer withheld NJ state tax for me instead of NY state tax. How do I file my state tax return?

You will have to file returns for BOTH years, claiming a tax credit on the NJ return for the NY taxes you will have to pay when you file the NY state return.

Note that you are now REQUIRED to efile the NY state return; the NY state tax department will fine you if you file a paper return without good cause.
