I recently attended a collectors show and saw an interesting clock at one of the collectors stands. It was an antique egg timer made in Germany that is driven by a steel ball. The top of the clock has an opening about 1 x 4 inches exposing the top portion of a round metal cage about 5 inches in diameter. In that cage there are 4 half-round cavities where the steel ball can be placed. Each cavity represents a different time duration to allow for different cooked egg preferences - soft, medium, medium hard or hard. After the ball is placed the metal cage begins to turn slowly and SILENTLY, without any escapement clicks. The owner explained that he has no idea how the internal mechanism works, and he does not want to open the enclosure to find out since that would ruin the clock.
