Hi
I am am a international graduate student on F1. Last year, I was on grad. Research assistantship where my advisor used to pay my stipend and tuition.
Suddenly I received an email that you have to pay taxes for your tuition and this happened thrice last year, spring, summer and fall 2010. If that tuition was not reimbursed to me, it was paid by my advisor on my behalf to the university, why should they ask me to pay taxes on it. It seemed a bit illogical since this did not happen in any other department apart from mine. Half of the tuition was waived and half was paid by the advisor directly to the university. But I guess I was taxed only on the amount paid (something like 500 for 4600)
Am I eligible for some kind of refund? Do I need to file some kind of form to get my taxes paid on tuition back.
