The catapult of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln accelerates an F/A-18 Hornet jet fighter from rest to a takeoff speed of 173 mi/h in a distance of 307ft . Assume constant acceleration.
a.)Calculate the acceleration of the fighter in m/s^2.
b.)Calculate the time required for the fighter to accelerate to takeoff speed.

Use the basic equations of motion:

a) v_f^2-v_i^2=2ad

Here v_f = 173 mi/hr, v_i = 0, and d = 307 ft. You will have to convert the velocity from miles per hour to meters per second, and the distance from feet to meters.

b) Use v_f = at. You were given v_f and found a in (a), so you can solve for t. Again, make sure all units are in meters and seconds.
