No but mold and mildew can. Tell us what is faulty about the shower and what is it made of.

It certainly could. Have you been performing the required maintenance on the steam generator on a regular basis? If not, look at the installation/maintenance manual or call the manufacturer of the steam generator and talk with the technical department and they can tell you how to clean/deodorize and maintain your unit on a regular basis!
