I just pulled out the bathroom sink stopper and successfully unclogged the drain. Now when I try to put it back in it does still move up & down as it should, but it's loose. I can't get it to go back in firmly. Any help appreciated. (Before I pulled the stopper out I did get under the sink and found the piece that controlled the up & down motion of the drain and loosened that)

Two ways to install sink stopper.

The first is to loosen nut around lift rod and pull it back an inch or so. Then drop stopper in drain with hole in stopper lined up so that when you push lift rod back into drain it will pass through stopper. This way when you pull the lift rod up it pulls the stopper down. When install this way you must loosen lift rod to remove and clean stopper.

The other way is to install lift rod first and then just drop stopper into drain. This way when you pull the lift rod up, you depend on gravity to make the stopper drop down. This way you can clean drain by just lifting stopper out. One problem with this way is that sometimes the stopper will get turned around so that the tip of the stopper can drop pass the lift rod.

Which way do you prefer?
