We have a fan which is about 9 years old the other day one of the lights keep flickering my husband tightened it a little and it quite. That was a few days ago. Today we went to turn it on and nothing except on a couple of the bulbs filaments lit a little, that was it now fan nor light works

Either the motor is starting to go and is drawing so much current, that the lights can not get enough, or there is a broken or bad wire somewhere. Try removing all the lights and see if it runs. If so, the problem is in the lights or their wiring, if not, its either the wall switch, wiring, or motor.
