Hello, I wanted to know if I use a three pronged cord to hook my generator to my breaker box will it work. Meaning if I put the positive wire on the 2legs of the breaker box the neural wire to the nutral side and the grond wire to the ground in the breaker box and plug the other end into my generator will this work. If you all have a beeter why let me know,

Its not legal to do that directly. First off you backfeed into the neighborhood and can kill a lineman. Then there is phase differentials.

You have to have the proper Generator transfer switch installed between where you hook the generator up and your breaker panel.

Oh I am sorry that I did no specify that this is a rual area there are no other neighbors no utilities at all I am trying to rig a system to get electricity through my home because we don't have city electric. So in this case the way I described it above is this the way to make a plug from the generator to the breaker box pannel or does it wire diffrently.

Doesn't matter. The lineman working on a power line 5 miles from your house that is disconnected from the grid for repairs and should have no power could suddenly become live and electrocute them when you hook up your generator and start it.

BUT if you are completely off the grid as I think you mean... with NO possible power company hookup at all. Then its different.

The power Entry point to a 220V panel has two hots, a common and a ground. Its important to know the differences between a common and a ground when its hooked up because an electrocution hazzard would exist..

Please explain exactly what you want to accomplish.

Also, how are you getting electricity to your residence. Is it supplied via a power company connection or are you also generating your own power?

What amperage do you need to generate? Are you using 120/240 Voltage?

Help us out a little please.

If there is no electric or power in the area, how come your home has electric in it, and a breaker box already?

If this is to always run power in the home, it should be hard wired into the system, Also how much are you running and what size if the generator
