OK I have a 1991 ef hatch, it has a obd1 converted d16y8 and the vtec solenoid is not hooked up and it has a non vtec po6 ecu hooked up. OK so here's the problem the car turns over and starts but then dies immediately. If you tap on the gas it keeps it going but then dies, you can do that a couple of times but then stops working, if you give it too much gas it dies right away. I bought a new furl filter and spark plugs. The check engine light is on, but I do not know how to check for codes, if you know what to do *** let me know thanks,
Kyle

It sounds like the ECM is in Security Mode.
That's not good because you most likely won't be able to disable that feature. Where did you get the ECM?

The ECU came with the car. How did it get into security mode and what is that, I've never even heard of that?

It may be a simple matter of just replacing the Ignition Control Module (ICM) and coil:

I recommend replacing these problematic components every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

OK well I bought a new dizzy because the one on the engine wasn't even to the d16y8 but the problem still persists

Was it a genuine Honda distributor? Over 50% of new aftermarket distributors for Hondas don't work at AMHD. Aftermarket distributors appear to have problems with the internal sensors (CKP, CYP, and TDC). If this doesn't solve your problem, there's likely a compatibility issue--ECM, wiring harness, sensors and engine all need to work together. My gut is there's a compatibility issue that needs to be worked out.

Yes it is, but I'm thinking it is the timing because when I first got the car it ran but sputtered until about 2k rpms then it sounded nice, I'm going to check the timing belt make sure its good or not and check to see if the timing is off, which most likely it is
