I have a well and have lost water pressure when I went to check the gauge it was on 0. so as anyone would I hit the box under the gauge and the pressure returned. It seems to have gotten progressively worse and now shuts off often a couple of times a day. Every time when you thump the grey box it returns. The water then comes out brown for a while and needs to run a while till clear.

Quite honestly, Troubleshooting wells is not my thing, but I suggest getting some answers from others that are good at trouble-shooting your situation.

Sorry but it's the best help I can be.

The gray box is the pressure switch, it turns the pump on and off.

It may be deflective. More likely the small line or tube from the tank to the switch (gray box) is clogged. Turn off breaker to pump, open faucet and let pressure off. Remove the line and clear.

If the switch is on the water line between the pump and the tank you will not have the little tube . Turn off breaker, let pressure off. Remove switch (unscrew from pipe) and clean the opening in the little pipe used to attach it to the water line.

Sounds like your pressure switch is going bad, fairly easy to change and not that expensive, just make SURE power is off before you start and put the wires back on the new switch just like they come off the old one. If your lucky you can extend the life a while by cleaning the contacts inside with a point file or small pieces of sandpaper, but again make SURE power is off before attempting!
