May you tell us what is the actual question?

I mean, what do you have to do?
Do you need to graph the equation? (Not likely)
Do you need to make y the subject of formula? Or x?
Do you need to simplify this?

Note that you cannot solve for x and y because there are infinite solutions. (You cannot solve for 2 variables with only one equation)

On the assignment is said Perform the indicated operations on this equation

– (5x +2y + 8)

I have no idea how to solve the equation.

Thanks for your help.

As far as I can see the only thing that can be done is this:

-(5x +2y + 8)=
-5x-2y-8=
-5x-2y=8 (*-)
5x+2y=-8

Are the values of x and y maybe given?

If so, just replace the values of x and y in the expression and simplify.

If not, you can only expand the brackets.

-(5x + 2y + 8) = -5x - 2y - 8
