Hello all... I have purchased a new washing machine and in removing the old appliance I have come across an interesting problem. The supply valve for both hot and cold water will not shut off completely. The hot valve is worse than the cold.

Now, as you can see from the picture, I broke the handle to the hot supply valve so at a minimum that needs to be replaced. I have never had a problem with water leaking through the stem or leaking through the hose at all. Once I removed the hose, the water was flowing from both openings.

Any thoughts on how to fix?

Shut off main water supply.

Loosen packing nut. This is located behind handle. Use 2 wrenches to keep pressure off pipe.

Remove spindle and replace washer.

Check the seat, which is located inside faucet. If not smooth, replace with matching seat. U will need a special tool to do this.

Put everything back together and turn on water.

If leaking at packing nut tighten till it stops.

Creahands is correct but considering the condition and type of valve you have I'd replace completely with 1/4 turn angle stops. Angle Stop Valve - 1/4 Turn Compression - AZ Partsmaster (http://www.azpartsmaster.com/Products/Angle-Stop-Valve---14-Turn-Compression__7070.aspx) or even a valve that shuts off both with one flip of one handle.
