Our house is 3 years old. The guest bathroom Toto toilet leaked under the house. I called a plumber and he said the wax ring was disintegrated and the toilet wasn't level. He also said there were two rings. He replaced with one. We had guests come and stay with us a few days later. The bathroom started smelling. I blamed it on our guests. The fan didn't seem to help. I called the plumber back, it had smelled badly in the morning, by the time the plumber came it stopped smelling. The plumber pulled the toilet and showed us that it is different then most. You have to pull another piece to show the ring. He said it wasn't anything he did. He suggested we go on room and get a hose and pour water down the vents. We have a tile roof and its slippery this time of year. Our toilet sits on Travertine flooring and we also have radiant floor heat. Why all of a sudden would we get this smell after the plumber was here? Could it be the vents or did the plumber not put enough wax rings under the toilet?

Depending on where the fan vent is located, is possible a back draft will pull sewer vent odors back through a fan. However, the greatest majority of the time it is a bad wax seal on the toilet. You can smell it coming between the toilet and the floor when the wind blows. Talk to the plumber again.

When the plumber pulled toilet, did u get a chance to see the wax ring. Was it compressed?

What is the height of ring mount? Should be flush with top of tile or a shade higher. If lower then flooring, need to add an extension.

Let us know what u find.

Good luck

I am going to start with acrack at the builder. A 3 year old home should not have 2 wax rings and neither should have failed. The rough in plumber or the finish plumber screwed the pouch on this one. Even if your vent stack is clogged you should not smell sewer gas unless your wax ring fails and I think it has. They do make oversized rings and maybe he use one but it was not enough. Can you pay a flat edge on the floor over the toilet falnge and tell us how much the flange is below the surface of the tile?
