Baby is breastfed and has been passing smelly gas and has not had a BM in 4 days. Is this normal? Baby seems to want to have a BM however only passes gas that smells like a BM

I wouldn't wait for an answer here if my baby hadn't had a BM in four days. Take your baby to your doctor.

It is not uncommon for breastfed babies to start to have fewer bowel movements after the first few weeks, sometimes going several days between them. It is also fine if they continue to have a few everyday.

With breastfeeding there is very little waste as breastmilk is easily digested. Rare that a breastfed baby will become constipated... which would result in small, hard stools that are difficult to pass.

As long as baby does not appear to be in pain, is feeding well, and is generally a happy baby, it is unlikely there is a problem. Once your baby does go, the consistency should be the same as usual, and the mustard like colour, you may get a fair amount.

Certainly a call or visit to the doctor can give you some peace of mind.

If you are really worried and in the UK, either ring NHS Direct or go to the chemist. I wouldn't worry that much if baby is happy - just as adults don't always go every day nor do babies.
