Took old fan down put new one up wired it the same way,and when power is turned back on the lights and fan work but when you try to turn them off with the switch they won't go off.

Then that means you are getting your power off a wire in the ceiling that is not connected to the switch. Is there a red wire in the ceiling box and do you think there may be a second switch somewhere in the room, a 3 way

Brutal truth... if your old fan worked with the switch and the new one does not... you wired it incorrectly.
