Last week I got hit by Trojan Horses and Virus', so I uninstalled a lot of programs and did a major cleaning of my computer.

When I try to install Adobe Reader or Acrobat 7 I get an error message pop-up: "Invalid Drive E" (see attached image).

I don't even HAVE a drive E on my computer.

Why is it looking for drive E?
How can I get around this?

When beginning the installation routine for Acrobat do you have the option for a Custom Installation? If yes then restart the install and select that option, watch carefully the screens that follow that have prompts waiting for your action, one of them might specify a drive that you can change.

By the way, are you installing this from a CD/DVD?

1. I always use Custom for installing software.
2. In both cases I used the downloaded .exe file for the installation.
3. In both cases I selected C: Program Files for the installation.

Bummer. Adobe is suggesting editing my registry:

I really don't want to do that.

You could mess with the registry or you could trick the computer. If you have a flash drive put it in and make sure its read as Drive E. Your installation will continue because it now recognizes a Drive E. It will still install in the Directory you chose (c: program files). This is just a way to trick the computer!

NOTE
This is a temporary work around. Obviously this doesn't fix a corrupted registry as that seems to be the issue. Your registry is showing a Drive E.

Very interesting. I plugged a flash drive into my computer and it shows as drive F.

In "My Computer" I show the following:

Local Disk C
DVD-RAM drive D
Removable Disk F
And Three folders.

Even with a flash drive plugged in, I still don't have an E drive.

Are you able to change it?

If not then your registry has created a victicious E: Drive.

Do you have Office 2010? It makes a virtual drive. I had it as part of my new computer and removed it for Office 2003.

Unless you absolutely need Adobe as your PDF reader...

Rick is referring to the installation of Acrobat, the PDF creator/editor program.
I do agree with you that the lighter PDF readers are less troublesome that the Adobe product, I use Foxit as well (just be careful to uncheck a few things during installation).

It's a Q: drive (forgot what letter it was), and it's only for the "Starter" version of Office 2010: Office 2010 Starter Virtual (Q:) drive may intermittently disappear from My Computer (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2257628)

I guess it would not affect Rick's issue. Anyway he's found the Adobe knowledge base article that acknowledges it's an Adobe product issue. Now he just needs some reassurance to use regedit (though I understand the trepidation).

Well, the forum I read on AdobeForums explained in great detail where to look and step-by-step instructions. Hopefully he found the same one!

Thanks guys. I downloaded Foxit and that now allows me to read pdf files. I don't really need Acrobat on this computer, so I'll be happy with Foxit.
