Hi,

I am on H1 visa (transfered from L1)
My wife and daughter do not have an SSN or ITIN.
They have returned back to India. I need to apply for tax returns for 2010.

I came to know from my friends that I need to apply for a ITIN along with the tax returns for that I need the passport copies notarized.

The US consulate in India has the notary services. Is it valid here in US ?

Regards,
Dhanraj P

If you can get the consulate to certify the passport and visa photocopes as true copies, then that will be sufficient for the IRS.

However, the U.S. State Department STOPPED that service in their embassies and consulates in 2009.

That means you will have to get the documents notarized by an Indian notary, PLUS get an apostille (statement under seal from the Indian government that certifies that the photocopy is a TRUE copy) for each document. That can take between three days to six months to get, depending on WHERE in India your family is located.

Is there any way I can get the documents notarized in US by showing the original passport.
I can get the original passport here.
Also will IRS file an ITIN if I produce the original passport.
