I have access to a friend's basement for storage and as a work room, but would like to know the temperature variations for the area before I move in.

There is no way to access it from inside her house and no bathroom- so asking her to check periodically or me staying overnight are both out.

I'd figure the boiler and hot water piping would keep the entire area fairly comfortable and stable, but I'd really like to confirm this before moving some of my temperamental gear in.

Is there any simple way or some basic thermometer which will record the highest and lowest point reached?

There are electronic thermometers that record max and min tempratures that would do what you want. And they aren't expensive.
