View Full Version : Making own Hydro Cream

MissC88 advised: "to dissolve the powder, but it in the cream or lotion that you want to mix it with, if the cream/lotion isn't already in a plastic or glass container/jar, put it in one, then boil some water and hold the container/jar in the boiling water. the hydroquinone will dissolve in minutes. So, how do I kno this? I also have the powder and thats how I always dissolve it. My mother, who's a pharmacist, told me this method" - What I would like to know is, does it matter what type of container you put your cream/lotion in - does the container have to be glass or plastic, clear or dark?

I have never done this myself, but having read hundreds of posts, others use clear glass jar to make HQ. Once the cream is made, store it in a air tight pump-action type bottle. Hope it helps.

You are very welcome Billie, do post how you got on. One day I will have a go at this too.
By the way, make sure you are doing this in a place which is NOT well-lit or sunny as HQ can react with light and air - the commonsesnual thing would be to use dark glass bottle but I assume the jar needs to be clear so you can see what's going on inside. Try to read though the posts of golden girl or if you can PM her, she will help you. Happy mixing :o)

Thanks pocahantas
I'll definitely be having a look at golden_girl's posts.
I ordered some Hydroquinone lotion 6% from Ioffer, but I think the seller cheated me! I have used almost all of an 18oz bottle of this lotion with no descernible difference. Because of this, I ordered from the same seller another 2 bottles but this time 8% hydro. But while waiting for these 2 new bottles to arrive, I began to think that it would be better for me to mix my own. That way I will know the cream will work and save myself some money too. I've tried so many other creams that did nothing except waste my money. I still don't know how much of the hydro powder to add to 500mls of cream/lotion. Does anyone know the answer???

Hi Billie,
Accordig to Kligman:
Hydroquinone powder 5%
Dexamethasone powder 0.1%
Tretinoin powder 0.1%
Hydrophilic ung qs ad 60gm
The reference is O.H. Mills and A.M. Kligman, J. Soc. cosmet. Chem., 1978,
29, 147.
Someone modified Kligman's formula as follows and had a great success:
Water 3ml
Hydroquinone powder (Kodak) 5gm
Retin A 0.05% cream (DNS) 15gm
Lidex cream (DNS) 15gm
Eucerin cream (DNS) qs ad 50 gm
You can Google 'Kligman's formula' and various helpful webpages will come up.
I have also ordered HQ from a user(Alder creek) on ioffer. Now I am worried if it is fake stuff like yours. Did you order from the same guy?
Do you live in UK? If so where did you get the HQ powder? I am struggling to get hold of any.
It is better to make your own, I agree with you. Buying HQ cream is expensive business and you never know what you are getting. But I am a bit scared to play the chemist just yet. A bit more reading and research is required.
Good luck, and talk soon.

Hi Pocahantas
Yeah, it sounds as though I got the hydro 6% cream from the same seller as you did on ioffer. What strength of the hydro cream did you buy, did you see the expected results?
As I live in the UK, I will have to buy the hydro powder from a seller on Ebay (I've asked about cost of shipping, still waiting for an answer). One could obtain the hydro powder from chemical suppliers, but you have to register on their websites with your company name etc etc. I've read here that you can just dissolve the powder in a cream of your choice, but I think I will dissolve the hydro in some special type of alcohol used in cosmetics. I'm just sick & tired of paying out large sums of money for products that don't work.
I hope this is useful to you Pocahantas.
Bye for now billie2010

Hi Pocahantas
Well, I had my reply from the seller on Ebay - he doesn't ship hydro to Britain. So I will have to continue trying to find a supplier of either 8% or 10%. This is turning into a tour de force! Have you found a supplier?
Bye for now :)

Hey Billie,
I understand your frustration - I envy every one who has managed to get hold of HQ powder (appearently its very cheap to buy, Kodak photo developing powder is recommended) and have managed to make their own Hydro.
We will get there, I am sure of it. Just spending too much money in the mean time.
I bought HQ8% from ioffer.com from a user called Alder Creek. He was very effcient in posting it, arrived quickly (2 days ago, I ordered on the 20th of dec). And he seems to be selling to users all over the world and quite a lot of it.
Someone told me that they also bought HQ from ioffer and it was fake!! But may be they bought from different user.
I don't know what HQ is suppose to look/smell like so don't know if mine is original or not - but the fact that the seller is very popular on ioffer and is selling lots is encouraging.
However, I am off to Pakistan on the 2nd of feb, I am going to get it tested while there - its much cheaper over there.
Where did you get the HQ powder from?
PM me if you don't want to say it here.

Hi pocahantas
Thanks, I read your update.
Well, it does seem we purchased our bottles of hydro cream from the same seller. I also bought mine from aldercreek---- on iOffer. It's just that I'm not sure he is being genuine about the strength of hydro he is selling. The first bottle 18oz 6% did nothing for my skin & I wrote to let aldercreek know, but he did not respond. So I thought I'd try his 8% also in 18oz bottles - waiting for my 2 bottles to arrive. The thing is, I managed to get these last 2 bottles from him much cheaper than the first bottle of hydro cream. So who knows what strength of hydro is really in that cream. Aldercreek also sells hydro powder but I don't want to buy from him in case I don't get the strength I pay for. Anyway, I hope I can soon buy some hydro powder and make my own cream to the strength I want and cut out the scammers. I've made some enquiries with suppliers of hydro powder this past week and am waiting to hear from them. Let me know if you have a good result from the cream you bought from aldercreek.
Bye for now:)
