I bought and installed a new heater 50 gallon tank.. and still no hot water yet its been over 2 hours... so my question is.. the two lines on top of the heater.going into your home.. whick is hot line and whick is cold line?

Standing in front of heater( facing panel), the cold(inlet) is on the left. The hot ( to faucets) is on the right.

It takes more then 2 hrs to heat water when starting fresh.

Not correct, Chuck, but easy mistake to make... had to double check myself, too... :)

If facing the front of the water heater, the cold water inlet to the heater is always on the RIGHT and the hot water outlet is always on the left (just like a faucet)... ;) Hot and cold should be clearly stamped into the heater just by each nipple port.

If this is a gas water heater, warm water can be detected within 20 minutes (or less of firing the unit). If this water heater is electrical you should be able to detect a warming of water after a half hour or so. Hot water will take longer, of course... ;)

If you have an electrical heater I would check the electrical connections at the tank using an electrical meter.

I might have my lines crossed... I have hot line left side and cole line right side with cut off valve... is this correct or chould I change the lines? If your standing in front of control panel.. hot side of my heater connected to left side cold connected to right side with cut off valve

Of should it be reversed.. the hot side has cut off valve?

My house lines are blk and white... lines on heater are red and black... I connected my white line with black from heater and my blk from home to red on heater.. im not getting any hot water are my lines crossed?

In the breaker panel, is the black/white cable hooked to a 2 pole breaker? This is needed for 220 volts.

If, in panel, the black goes to breaker and white goes to ground strip then u have 110 volts.

Did u hook up the ground wire that is coming from the house with the black and white to the ground screw? This is necessary to operate as 220 volts.

I have double breaker single pole... shoule I connect white to red and black to black?

White /blk from home... red/blk on heater... how do I connect?

Each leg is 110 volts. Does not have effect on operation. Would mark white wire with black tape to let everyone know it is a hot leg.

Did u hook up ground wire?

Lot of work to go through. It could also be a bad breaker so don't go returning this too quickly!

Have you tested for power at the water heater? If not, test for power into the heater and let us know what you find.

I do have power coming from breaker to the unit.. its a older home with white/blk and ground wire only.. I have white/blk and red blk connected... but reading with newer units it might be white red and blk blk connections

Either leg should work as both are carrying 110 volts IF this is a 220V system. Have you tested both wires and confirmed 110 volts to each? Let me know.

I would consider having an electrician come in here... seems something is odd, but you should not have to take out the entire heater over it as it will most likely be something easy to fix.

I have 120 commming off both legs and ground... I reset the unit and turned up heating probe... if that don't work I have a bad thermostat and will return unit

A lot of work to replace the entire unit over a bad thermostat. Why not just pick up a new thermostat from the original supplier? I am sure it is under warranty...

I would still recommend letting an electrician pop in.

So you called ion high priced help and he left without getting you hot water? Something smells fishy here. He told you what COULD be wrong instead of locating and repairing the problem. And this was a SERVICE CALL? In fact this entire thread seems a little fishy to me.
1) a asker that has to be told what side hot and cold is on **and**
2) A electrician that doesn't check for power to the heater and leaves the job unprepared.

And now you're returning the water heater. Why? Did the electrician tell you, (along with the other things he said MIGHT be bad? Or is this just another "What side's cold water on??" I think Mark's gone the extra mile with you. What do you think? Back to you, Tom
