Snap-on tools credit called me and said I owe them money from a 20 year old debt

Well it would clearly be over the states SOL, but that doesn't mean the debt ceases to be, just they cannot take legal action to enforce it.
Clearly you will NOT be able to get further credit from these people for anything else, but other than that, there's nothing they can really do.

It's true. They can't sue you... But, they certainly can hassle you about it, and are, apparently, going to do just that.

My answer needs an addendum. The Fair Credit Reporting Act does offer some protection for you. If they really DO get involved in your life, you can send them a demand letter to cease and desist, and they must comply. If it get's to that point, send your letter certified, return receipt requested.

That is of course unless many years ago, they already got a judgement.
Also was it a personal debt or was it from a business you had that was corporation perhaps ?
