Ok
So I just got Teamfortess 2 on steam the other night and it wasn't working right
I started it up, did the training stuff, but there was lag but I didn't think anything of it
So I went on a server, and again it was lagging, I didn't think much of it either, just decided I needed to lower my qualities a little
So I do, I go to options, lower the qualities on it, click done then, click, my computer shuts off, not like it normally does if I were too change something like that, and it never said anything about a required reset, just *click* black screen
So I immidatly try and turn my laptop back on, when I do it lasts 30 seconds before it clicks off again, so I decide to give it a minute, and I do and It turns on right but I get the black options screen "Run software recovery" or something and "start windows normally" so I do recovery, it takes forever and I have to leave to go to my girlfriends house so I tell my brother I'd call him and have him check up on things, so we do, I call him he checks and says the computer says that it can't find recovery or it isn't in need of it or it was still going, which I'm sure was it because when I got home my laptop was laying bottum up which probubly means the battery was pulled out
So I go on and files I had recently deleted were back, and some I had recently downloaded were gone
So I did my thing, fixed everything up, had to reset skulltag which as a pain
I hadn't checked back up on tf2 since yesterday, and steam had downloaded a new update onto it
When ever I try to start a server it says something along the lines of"this server is running and older version of tf2" as in the update I got is too new to run the server
This wouldn't be so unsettling, but its every server
I was wondering, does this normally happen with servers after I download updates, or is something wrong
And
I think my laptop crashed due to over heat,I had kept it on for a month or so, not like on on but put it to sleep when I was done
But could this crash be partly responsible for my tf2 not working, could it have messed up important files?

Ok, I don't know that particular piece of software so I can't help with that piece, but your crash sounds like what happens when a program changes settings in a way that won't work for the hardware and drivers present, more than an overheat. The fact that hitting a system restore point fixed it helps confirm my diagnosis. I would have tried a restart normally the first time just to be sure but that's for next time lol. The changes you noted - deleted stuff back, new stuff missing - are part of the system restore. When you set a restore point your computer takes a snap shot of how it's set up. When you choose that restore point it recreates the computers state at that time.

I would uninstall the program run CCleaner especially the registry cleaner, and Malwarebytes (both free) then set another restore point.

Then I'd reinstall the program. If that doesn't fix it I'd look for a forum specific to the game.
