It looks like the kitchen sink in my basement is plumbed to a downpipe via a clean out - is there a problem continuing with this or should I seeka plumber to fix

Sorry to say that , yes! You have a problem. You sink is out of code.
Code sez you can not discharge major fixtures past a unvented minor one. You sink must be vented. If AAVs (Air Admittance Vents) are allowed you can install a AAV directly behind the trap, (see image) Good luck, Tom

Hi Bruce...

Are you saying that your drain connects into a drainpipe via a cleanout? If so, and you are having no problems then I say leave it alone at this point... ;) Although against code, you can always add another cleanout if you have issues down the road.

Like Tom, I also think you need to add an AAV (mechanical vent) as we are both betting that if someone connected into the cleanout they probably didn't vent the sink as well... ;)

Let us know more, OK?

Mark
