One a 1996 Camry, what is the meaning of the warning light which is a yellow car with ' ' ' ' under its back bumpers. It is on the left hand side of the instrument panel. Thanks

It's a Check Engine Light, indicating there's a problem with the emissions control system. Attach a code reader to the data link connector, located under the dash, and obtain the diagnostic trouble code stored in the computer's memory.

Camry96, most Auto Parts store will read the codes at no charge. Good luck

Is that on all the time or only after you step on the brakes?
That may be the rear lamp monitor you're seeing.
If you get in and start the car, the lamp will be OFF until you step on the brakes, have someone step on the brakes while you inspect for all brake lights: fender mounted left and right, trunk lid mounted left and right, and center high-mounted third brake light. If you don't see all of them, start checking bulbs.

CaptainRich read your question more carefully than I did. He's right and I was wrong.

Camry 96 thanks you for your replies. We thought it was the brake lights system and have visually tested them. They all seem to be on but maybe we aren't seeing multiple bulbs. We will re-check the lights and the bulbs. We know someone who can test for diagnostic trouble codes; perhaps that will provide the exact answer. The light does appear only after stepping on the brakes and showed up only after I have an emissions test and a safety check. So perhaps the connections in the lighting system aren't made tightly?

They may have installed a bulb for you. If they did, chances are the one in the back window isn't the proper bulb.
It may be lit up, but the resistance seen at the lamp failure sensor sees a fault.
If you get the right one, it should be for the brake. It should be an 18W bulb. A larger version of the small 194 bulb.
