I'm trying to hang a chandelier and can get it to turn on but it won't turn off at the wall dimmer unless I unscrew the fuse (from old fuse box).

Chandelier has two wires, one marked with black tape. The ceiling has one cable with three copper wires, sheathed in black, red, and white. And, two old cloth covered copper wires.

Can anyone help in figuring out what wires go where?

Thanks.

How where these wires connected to the old fixture? You need to use a multimeter to test the old wires. Chances are good the cloth covered wires are the original hot and neutral, ground wires where not use on lights back in the day. The cable sounds much newer and the red may indicate there is a second switch somewhere nearby
