To avoid a false negative, an antibody test should be given 3 months after exposure.

I had been advised to be tested as soon as 6 weeks after possible exposure.

I heard 6 to 8 weeks.
The reason I know this, is because a friend of mine was doing a construction job and another guy was using a machine that cut off his hand, so my friend held him while EMTs were on there way. The guys blood got into a cut that my friend had. So he contacted a Doctor, in which he had told him to get tested 6 to 8 weeks.
Were you exposed to someone else's blood?
I wish you luck.

Yes, both correct in essence but you can be tested and receive a false negative(note what I am saying here a FALSE NEGATIVE). You can be tested as many times you want, but you should be tested 3 months after to receive a positive reading.

Depends on which test is used, the ELISA or the Western Blot.
