Our washer is in the basement and drains to an open sump pit (submersible pump), which, after it fills to a certain level, will turn on pump out the gray water. The pit has been really stinking the last year or so. We flush it out occasionally which helps for a while, but the smell always comes back. Can it be plumbed directly out instead of going to our sump pit first? We have a high efficiency washer, so it sometimes takes several loads to get the pump to kick on and push it out. We had one plumber come in but all he did was clean out the pit and replace a backflow valve that was broken. That did not seem to help the problem for very long.

If you could cover the pit that would help a lot. Your washer pump can pump a eight foot head with no sweat. If the washer's then only fixture draining into the pit why not seek to direct it elsewhere? This would mean cutting a trap, a AAV and a short standpipe so the washer could be connected with a compression fitting or rubber coupling. The pit has a cover, but is not sealed. The washer drains 10ft horiz. To pit then the pump pumps it up, over, and into kitchen sewer line (8-9ft) up. Can washer pump alone push it that far?our softener and furnace also drain to sump pit.what is AAV

A AAV is a Air Admittance Valve used when you can't run out a vent pipe.
If your washer is fairly new it should pump a 8 foot head with no sweat. Of course you would need a longer hose and a hose check valve at the washer outlet. If your pit has a lid why can't it be sealed?
Why does the furnace drain into the pit/ Do you mean the AC condensate line? Regards, Tom
