Bad idea to drive without a thermostat--try replacing it first. It will cost you a bundle in poor gas mileage and performance. Depending upon where you live in Florida, the water can have tons of phosphate and other minerals in it. Make sure the radiator and heater core are not blocked by mineral buildup or corrosion. If they are, have them rodded or replaced.

Never run without a t-stat, many sub systems depend on it. Change t-stat and flush system
Check that your fans are working properly. Also check for a possible collapsing hose.
Check gauge sender /sensor and connection to it.

Have a 2003 dodge ram 1500 with a 4.7 liter engine. I am also having the same problem. So far I have replaced the theromstat water pump fan clutch, temp sensor and did a complete flush of the system. Still vehicle is overheating at highway speeds only. The mechanic at the dealership said that it was a bad rediator since I already repalced everything else. Replacing radiator tomorrow we will see if it corrects the problem.

We went to a radiator shop for analysis - the radiator had enough corrosion to warrant replacement. Changing the radiator has solved the problem - there has been no overheating since putting in the new radiator.

madbob4, make sure to only use a 50/50 mixture of G-05 HOAT antifreeze and distilled water.
