I am assuming your want to control the fan and the light separately, right. No can do without one of two options. #1 run new extra cbale to the eciling box and back to the wall switch so you have 2 hot lines, a white nuetral and a ground. Option 2 install a remote control made for a light/fan combo

I'm sorry about the confussion, but you are right I want to use the light in the hall without having to run the fan, or visa versa.Before I installed the fan at one of the existing light locations we had two ceiling lights and two wall switches.
