Hi, I am redecorating a bathroom. The house was built around 1910. It appears that there may have been railroad tile on the lower half, but the mortar lines are still on the wall. Is there a way to smooth those lines down so that I can paint over it?

If the plaster is in good shape you can use a sander to smooth out the wall. Have you tried a putty knife yet, do so.
