There is a timer in every auto defrost fridge, timer runs just like a clock, every cycle (24hours), there is a time (10 minutes), it would activate the Heater to melt the ice between the freezer and the fridge so that the cold air from the freezer can get down to the fridge, if there is ice build up, cold air can't get to the fridge, this seems like what your problem is.
Most likely the problem is in the timer, if you know where the timer is located, you can turn the timer manually to where the defrost area of the cycle, you can tell if the heater works.
You can buy the timer in plumbing store, I suggest to take the existing one out to get an exact match. Its is about $30-$40 (not sure)
Hope this helps.
