I had some flooring work done in my house. Two guys came out and did it in three days when I got the bill I was charged for an extra day, I called to ask and the owner hung up on me. Now he is giving me a higher bill... can he do that?

Did you have a contract? What did it say? If no contract, he can tell you anything, it's your word against his. That's why you get a contract for work done by others.

No, no contract. He was supposedly a "friend" - Ive known him a long time so I trusted him, I have definitely learned my lesson. Thing is he gave me a bill for 1478.00 - now he has given me another different bill for 2487.00..

If the bill is on his letter head, would pay lower amount. When paying bill, do not send him original. This u will need if he sues u for balance.

Did u have any work done after the first bill?

No, no work was done after the first bill. I received bill #1 a month after the work was completed. I called to ask a question about the hours I was charged and he said it would make me a better bill now 2 weeks later I get it and it is higher.

What was the price agreed upon? By the day or hour? Did it include material? Was itemized?

We had not set a price. I had all the materials already at the house and paid for all they did was install the floor. The first bill has # of hours per day and a total. The second bill has a little more with rates and a higher total.

If I calculated correctly, 8 hrs a day per man times 3 equals 48 hrs. This equates to just short of $31 per hr per man. This is not a bad price in the NYC area for nonunion workers.

The other rate is above $51. Wish I could get that.

Still say pay first bill and fight the difference.
