View Full Version : What do I do if the cat hasn't eat the placenta?

My cat just had two kittens but she hasn't eatn the placentas and its been about an hour now what do I do ? They are still attatched is that bad? Will she detatch them herself or do I need to help her... im hoping I don't need to help her...

Are the kittens alive, can you tell ? Usually a mom cat will do this as soon as they are born. No, I wouldn't do anything just yet. If you touch them now, that may discourage her from taking care of them. The queen eats the placenta immediately to discourage predators, it eliminates the smell of blood. Could be she just doesn't feel threatened enough to do it yet. If she doesn't, you must pack her and the kittens up and make a trip to the vet to find out the underlying problem of why she is not cleaning up the afterbirth.
