I feed my dog with curd, rice and boiled vegetables in the afternoon with a pinch of salt and a half a spoon of sugar. I give him chapati and milk for dinner. He usually doesn't have breakfast... although we serve him with pedigree every day. Some times he eats and some times he doesn't. As we are vegetarians and its difficult to give him non veg every day,we feed him with non veg once in a month. Is this diet OK for him.. is giving him milk and curd OK..

Dogs are meat eaters. They need to eat meat, everyday. In the wild the only grains, vegetation and fruit they would get, would be when they eat the stomach and feces of their prey.

So, even though it does sound like a nice healthy diet, dogs need to have meat int her diets. Are you talking about Pedigree the dog food brand? That's not a very high quality chow, so if you can, I would consider finding a better brand, non commercial are the best as they have little to no fillers and are high in meat count.

Feeding your dog the diet you feed along with a meat source would be okay, as long as your dog is able to digest the food and no allergies arise. Milk is a product that you shouldn't feed your dog, as his stomach can not fully digest it.

I understand being vegetarian, I was one for 5 years, but it's not fair to make your dog vegetarian.

Dogs are carnivores, their digestive system is made to digest meat. While vegetables are good for them yes, it is certainly not a good diet alone.

There are plenty of alternatives to feeding raw meat though, I feed canned food and some kibble.
Or even better you could ask your local butcher to cut up raw meat into appropriate sized pieces and you don't even have to touch it, just open the bag and drop it in the bowl.

As Bella said, milk is not good for dogs. Dogs are lactose intollerant.
You can buy "dog milk" from supermarkets and pet stores, or alternatively you can also give goat milk... but really, all adult dogs need is water.

Start adding the meat slowly, over a few weeks, so it doesn't upset his stomach. Just maybe a quarter of his meal to start with and then the next week make half his meal meat and so on.

A cheaper brand that I have found good is Supercoat, it is made by Purina... it isn't the best but it certainly isn't junk either.
Another one that I used to feed is Royal Canin, it's very oily and does smell a bit but the dogs went crazy for it.

Then there are the holistic brands, there aren't very many available here in Australia but Bella could probably recommend a few brands.

If he loves his chapati and milk he can still have that as a treat, maybe once a week, but replace the regular milk with lactose free milk.

I'm a huge fan of Holistic brands. Are you in America? If you give me your general area, I can search for a holistic dealer in your area.

I have provided a link with a fairly common Holistic brand of food. You should be able to find this in any area.

Welcome to Holistic Blend - Holistic Blend (http://www.holisticblend.com/en/)

Another great brand is "Chicken Soup for the Dog". It's pretty expensive, and IMO, you find equally quality brands for less.

Here is another link, as you can see it says senior, but they have adult formulas as well. I wanted you to take a look at this site, it gives you the break down of what's in the food.
