14k refers to the gold karat purity. All gold used in jewelry is mixed with other metals to make it easier for jewelrs to work with and more durable over all. Gold purity is expressed in karats- or 24 parts. The purest gold you can find is 24 karat gold, which is nearly 100% gold. 18 karat gold, for example, is 18 parts gold to 12 parts alloy (75% pure gold) 14k means that the gold in your ring is 14 parts gold to 10 parts allow (58%puregold).
