I just got 2 crowns put on 1 week ago. The first day it was a little sore of course, then the next two days were fine. THEN.. the next day, the two teeth with the new crowns on started hurting bad! Not when I bite down necessarily.. but just constant pain. Went back to the dentist, he "adjusted" one of them, gave mouthwash, told me to call in couple days and let him know how I was. The pain persists and I had another visit and he "adjusted" the other crown. He said it could be infected, gave antibiotic medication, and if it continued that I would possibly need a root canal! Yikes! What does this sound like? Infection or in need of root canal? Or maybe a nerve is exposed?

Did your DDS take any x rays to see if there were any problems? Like an abcess? I would try to go back and see if the crowns need to be adjusted again. You might be hitting it first (the crown might be a little too high) Also give these teeth a little break, chew on the other side. Did the antibiotic help with the pain? (that will give you a clue to what is causing the pain)
Good Luck!

If the nerve is infected (usually detected on an x-ray) you will need antibiotics AND a root canal. There could be some root exposure, you can use Sensodyne or have the dentist apply an in office desensitizer. Advil might help for a few days until the teeth settle down from all the work recently done.
