I need to move my panel to the meter location (20 feet) as the main feed wire is on the inside of the house and runs about 20 feet. I'm told that this isn't up to code? I live in Pgh. Pa. Thanks for any advise, John

John,

Are you saying that the main feeder cable is run 20' inside your home to reach your panel?

Just because something is not up to current code level does not necessarily mean that it needs to be changed.

The positioning of your panel may have been correct under a previous level of code and is therefore "Grandfathered" or allowable under the current code.

When was your home built?

Can you give us a better description of the installation?

You may have to do nothing more that install a disconnect switch where the service feeder enters the home, ground the disconnect to your cold water system and then run a 4 wire cable to the existing panel.

Then you can change your panel so the Neutral is no longer bonded to the ground at the panel.

As to you removing the meter so that you can move the panel, you would first need to talk to the power company because they own the meter. In our area, they only allow a licensed electrician to pull the meter. In order for you to do the work, you will need to get a permit (necessary anyway) and see if the local authority having jurisdiction will let you pull the meter.

Another thought, here in Virginia, the power company will want an inspection verification before they let the meter go back in.

In addition to the proper advice Don has given, the utility company does not allow anyone to remove their meters due to it is their source of revenue, and for safety.

There is a tremendous amount of unprotected energy at an electric meter. I have the burns to prove it.

Once a the Main Disconnect is moved away from the immediate entrance point of service conductors, the rules change. The wires are not protected by fuse or circuit breaker, and Code does not allow this feeder to go to far beyond point of entrance.

Therefore , you need to do what Don mentions, install a disconnect at the meter location, and change the feeder to a 4 wire, two hots, a neutral, and an equipment ground.
