View Full Version : What are advantages of multi phase (6 or 12) AC over direct current?

I have heard on both sides about advantages of DC/AC and viceversa. However, I've read there's multi phase (six or twelve phase) electricity being tested and that power loss and overall AC working is better the more phases you have. Twelve phase AC seems to bring less loss than, let's say, three phase AC.

My question is... what will be the advantages in the future of six-or-twelve phase AC over direct current? Will it be more efficient? Less dangerous? Anything you'd like to post here about multiphase (6 or 12, not common three phase, please unless you think it's worth). Thanks to anyone in advance, this seems interesting.

While 6 and 12 phase systems offer advantages in efficiency the cost to convert existing systems does not justify conversion to these systems. (Also, these are not new but were considered many years ago when three phase was set a the standard) DC has the advantage of allowing connections between various systems, 3, 6, 12 phase or single phase may be converted to DC and then via an inverter brought back to AC.
