We have started weaning our 4 and a half month old and she is loving it but seems to want to eat an awful lot.We are feeding her twice a day quarter of mashed banana for lunch and then 1 tablespoon of baby rice for dinner. Is this too much?and are we feeding to often, should it only be once a day.Can we cause damage to her tummy? All answers appreciated. Thanks

If she is tolerating this amount without having gas or throwing the food up you should be okay with this regimen. But don't overdo it as regular baby food should be used like the baby rice. My son loved most baby foods. You can make your own just be sure that you don't add salt and pepper or butter to your baby food that you prepare on your own. There are sites that show you how to make your own baby food from wholesome ingredients in your kitchen. I only would use jar baby food if I was not at home to make my own for my son.

Thanks so much for replying,I will definitely be making my own food. The only thing I will buy is organic baby rice which she loves. She does however seem to be getting little bits of sick up often do you think I should cut back on her food even though she cries for more. Its a very daunting time and I appreciate your answers. Thanks

Increase her formula intake if she's crying for more. 4 1/2 months is still a little young to start on solid (baby) food. Also, know that bananas may constipate her.

Nutritionally there is no need to be weaning just yet, and it can cause some problems for some babies. If there is a family history of allergies, it is best to leave it a bit longer. Sure she will enjoy them, but her digestive system will be working a bit harder to break them down and she won't absorb the nutrients as well until she is a little older.
Her milk (formula or breastmilk) should be offered first and any solids should be minimal at this stage. While we often think babies need to get on three meals a day, they eat differently than older children or adults. Whereas we have our food with the drink on the side, in the first year, formula or breastmilk is their main source of nurtrition... solids are a compliment. It is a very gradual process later into the first year with a slow increase in solids and a decrease in milk.

Thanks for the feedback, the only reason we started weaning so early was because she started waking in the night for food. Also she will never take more than 5 ounces at a time so its hard to get more formula into her,we did try this first.

Since we weaned her she has been sleeping again through the night but we will try and maybe feed her just once a day for now. Thanks again :)
