We are planning on waiting two to three years before we start dating. So that way I will be 16 and he will be twenty. Is it illegal for us to talk all the time (like we are dating) but not actually date or have sex? And we live far from each other so we never see each other.

Dating? Depends on where you are...

Engaging in sexual activities? Yes, it is illegal. You are a minor at 14 and at 16.

Even if you wait, and he is 20 and you are 16, you are still considered a minor, therefore, if you two do engage in sexual activities, he can be arrested and have that on his record.

Honestly, if you two care so much for each other, then he will wait until you are of legal age (18).

I know that's far away, but I highly doubt you want to see him get in trouble.

What do your parents think of this?

You can talk to him, but if he crosses the line (delves into sexual conversations, or anything inappropriate) than he can get into a great deal of trouble.

He's legally an adult, you're still a child. Even at 16 you're still a child. At 18 you can date him freely, but right now, and even 2 years from now, it's not a good idea.
