Years ago, I watched a movie about a young man who is on a summer holiday with a friend. The movie may have been black and white. They end up in the country. I keep thinking perhaps the French countryside. The main character is from an upper class background and may be studying to be a doctor. He falls in love with a young, poor local girl. They have a short affair and he leaves. She ends up pregnant and raises the child alone. He comes back to the area as a much older man. She has died and he meets his grown son that he never knew about.

You're talking about A Summer Story, which came out in 1988 or 1989. It's in color and set in England. Great movie.
