Hello everyone. It's been a while since I hung out. But here I am. Ok, so my wife and I are remodeling our bathroom. The cast iron waste line was rotted at the spot were the toilet flange pipe connects to the waste line. So I figured I was going to replace the cast iron with pvc. So I rented a soil pipe cutter. I first installed three pipe clamps to support the cast iron that wasn't being replaced. I then started to remove the cast iron all the way to the basement where I was going to tie in the pvc. Well when I was done , I noticed the pipe was loose. So I tried to pull up on the pipe and it all came up from the ground. Rotted at the bottom. Can I use a no hub coupling to connect the pvc to iron? Also, do I now have to break up basement floor to connect pvc to iron and if so, how do I locate which way the pipe is running so I can cut cement. Or what does anyone recommend?

Yes, you use Fernco "PVC to Cast Iron" shielded coupling. As far as locating the pipe goes: call plumber with pipe locator. He will trace the pipe for you and mark its location on the floor for you.

Hey Dave, Welcome back! Yes, As Milo stated you'll transition to PVc from cast iron using a Shielded band, (see image).

I don't know why you would have to call in outside help to locate the pipe when you already have a starting place. I would start at the place the pulled up and follow the pipe until I found cast iron that was good enough connect to. If you find the old cast iron's too ate up to work with I would consider looking into a reline job. If you want more information on relining old cast iron I can help since I had it done at my place. Good luck on your remodel. Tom
