I baught a car recently (abouta month ago) and it failed inspection (I live in MA) so we brought the car back the "fixed" the check engine light issue but as soon as we got it home again the light came back on so AGAIN we brought it back this time they really did fix it and to be sure drove the car around extra long before trying to get it inspected again for the 3rd time... we were about to bring it to get inspected when I noticed the sound of a major exhaust leak so I crawled underneath the car and saw that an entire section of the exhaust piping had either rotted away or just broke off and I know this will cause the car to fail again for a third time. Pep boys said it will cost just under 1k to fix and I do not have that kind of money any suggestions what I can do?? Can I make the dealership fix it? I do have a loan on it can I make them pay off the loan and take the car back? Or maybe give me another car(not that id trust another car from them but still lol)?? Also there are other issues with it too but some are to be expected with a car this age (1999) any help would be GREAT thanks in advance

Exhaust systems are wear and tear items... if its rusted away its YOUR problem to fix. They rarely last the life of the car, particularly in the areas that see snow and use road salt. $1,000 is way high... I'd talk to other shops and get more estimates. It should cost less than 1/2 that.

Hello,

Sounds like you did not get the care inspected prior to purchase ?

So was there a warranty on the car when you purchased it, if so what does it cover.

But exhaust is not normally a cover warranty item.

And agreed, 1000 dollars seem very high, I would go to a shop that specializes in exhausts.

But unless there is a covered warranty, no you can not make them do anything, if you bought the car "as is" you are just out of luck.
