Our AC broke down so I called a local licensed servicing company to come out and estimate how much the repair cost is going to be. The tech said that we need to replace the capacitor. He checked with his company and on the internet and he said that the model we have has been discontinued and no longer available. He said that the only option is to replace our AC unit which will cost $7000.00! I don't have that kind of money so is there another kind of capacitor we can buy to replace the burnt one? Ours is a GE Dielektrol Capacitor Z97F5245FB, 45uf, 06 -06%, 440 vac, 50/60 hz. Can someone please help us?

What happened that it "broke down". Usually a failed capacitor won't allow the motor to start or it will run slowly. Capacitors are readily available. A good electrical supply store, not HD or Lowe's, should be able to find a matching capacitor or one with similar microfarad (uf) and voltage. At worst case, the motor could be replaced for $500+/-. Don't let them sell you a new unit for a capacitor if that is the only thing wrong-as you indicate.
